10 easy sewing patterns for beginners

Starting sewing can be a bit overwhelming, can’t it? There are so many patterns out there and they are all so different it’s hard to know where to start.

Well let me make it a bit easier for you. Here are a variety of patterns, all from different independent pattern designers, which are suitable for beginners. I’ve tried to pick patterns that are different styles and cater to varying ranges of sizes so there is more chance of you being able to find something in this post that will fit.

Hope you find something you enjoy!

The cushion

A simple cushion is the perfect first project if you’ve never sewn before. This course from The Stitch Sisters shows you how to create three different styles so you can create a wonderfully cosy cushion collection.

The cami top

The ogden cami is a legend in the sewing sphere and it is easy to see why. It is a classic shape that doesn’t go out of style. This one can be a little trickier if you choose a slippery fabric but if you stick to something more stable like a cotton lawn for the first one you’ll be well on your way to the silk cami of your dreams.

Sizes available: adult US 0-30, kids US 2T-10

The pyjamas

I love a good pair of pjs and ultimate pyjamas from Sew Over It really are that; the ultimate pair. This is a great project to get to grips with sewing trousers as they require minimal fitting but you can get to grips with hemming trousers and attaching legs together.

Sizes available: UK 8-18 (Sew Over It are currently expanding their patterns so I’ll update the sizes if this changes)

The boxy t-shirt and dress

The Cielo top and dress is a fabulous first top pattern and there are lots of sleeve options so you can make it multiple times and have a different look every time.

Sizes available: US 0-30

The wide-legged trousers

Muna and Broad are pretty well known for their Glebe pants, and it is no surprise as they are fantastic. You could make them in a linen for everyday wear or in a cosy brushed cotton to turn them into pjs.

Sizes available: 46.5″-71.5″ (118-181.5cm) Hip

The mini skirt

The Ginger skirt by Colette patterns has three waistbands to choose from which give a little extra pazazz to a simple skirt.

Sizes available: US 0-18

The staple tee

The Deer and Doe Plantain t-shirt is a free pattern that is bound to become a regular make.

Sizes available: UK 6-24

The swishy dress

I could have picked a lot of patterns from Tilly and the Buttons as they have an excellent array of patterns for beginners but as the Lotta dress is their new one I’ve gone for that. As well as being a super simple pattern, you can even sewalong virtually as they have a video class which makes the learning process even easier.

Sizes available: UK 6-24

The midi skirt

The By Hand London Jessica skirt may look fancy but it’s actually pretty easy. And who doesn’t love that combination?!

Sizes available: UK 6-24

The jersey dress

The Turner dress from Cashmerette is a fantastic beginner pattern that would be a great introduction to sewing jersey for the first time.

Sizes available: US 12-32 (Cashmerette are currently expanding their size range so I’ll update the sizes if this changes)

I hope that’s enough to wet your whistle! If you’d like more pattern suggestions I actually filmed this video last year and it has 5 more pattern suggestions for beginners.
