If you know me personally or follow me on Instagram you’re probably aware that I’m a bit of a beauty and skincare junkie. Now I’m no beauty blogger, I don’t get gifted make-up from big brands, I’m not going to jump on a hyped up brow product just so I can post about it and I’m certainly not going to be splurging all my money on a £100 moisturiser made of gold and babies’ first tears.
Instead, I like to research my purchases and buy sensibly. If I find a product that works for me I’ll repurchase it and if it doesn’t, I’ll use it up and then try a different one. So with that in mind, here are the products I’ve really *loved* this year.
Cleanser – La Roche-Posay Toleraine dermo-cleanser
My ride or die. I discovered this two years ago when I was on holiday and had an allergic reaction to a different cleanser. The pharmacist recommended this and it cleared it right up. I haven’t used anything else since.
Face scrub – Kiehl’s Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub
I’m not an avid user of face scrubs as I find that with sensitive skin they can do more harm than good but if I do feel in need of one this is the one I reach for. It is super gentle on your skin so I find it just gives my face a little perk-up rather than rubbing off a whole layer of skin.
Eye cream – Lancôme Advanced Génefique eye cream
To be honest I’m unsure how much eye creams actually reduce bags or anything else they claim but this does feel delightfully moisturising and is that little step of luxury that makes me happy every morning and night.
Day moisturiser – Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturiser SPF 30
A moisturiser that is kind to sensitive skin, sinks in quickly without leaving a weird feeling and has SPF 30? TAKE ALL MY MONEY!
Night moisturiser – Lancôme Renergie Multi-Lift Ultra Full Spectrum cream
There’s no denying it, this stuff is pricey and there probably are perfectly good night moisturisers out there that are a fraction of the price. But if you are interested in spending a bit more then I recommend this one. It’s definitely more of a cream that a moisturiser so it feels like it is firming your skin and it doesn’t take forever to sink in.
Face mask – My Clarins Re-Charge Relaxing Sleep Mask
I can’t stand face masks that dry or that you have to wash off so this is perfect for me as it’s basically a heavy moisturiser. I use it when my skin is looking dull and it works a treat. Also does a pretty good job of hiding a hangover!
Face primer – Becca Skin Love Brighten & Blur primer
This is the only scented product I have and it surprisingly doesn’t hurt my skin. It’s lightly watermelon scented which is a lovely pick me up but the real reason I love it is it doesn’t roll off like some primers do and sits really well on top of moisturiser and underneath foundation.
Highlighting moisturiser – MAC strobe cream in pinklite
When I first got this I wasn’t to sure how to use it but after trying it out every way possible I have discovered it’s really versatile. It looks great if you aren’t wearing make up and just want a bit of zing, you can dab it over make up on your cheekbones or you can use it on your body to accentuate parts like your collar bones. You can also use it under or over make up to give a glow.
Concealer – Urban Decay stay naked concealer in 30nn
I have really dark circles under my eyes so any concealer has to be pretty damn strong to get my seal of approval. This is the dream consistency for me as it has the staying power of cement but is moisturising and brightening. It sets quickly though so dab and blend straight away.
After years of Rimmel stay matte powder this was a stab in the dark. I find it is a lot more brightening so my make up looks fresher. Also, it’s a reasonable price so that’s a win in my book!
Contour/bronzer – Bobbi Brown bronzer in golden light
This is the perfect shade for me as it is dark enough to work as contour but not greyish, and warm enough to bronze but not orangey. It blends really nicely and works surprisingly well with cream blusher.
Blusher – Glossier cloud paint in puff
Perfect for a fresh, dewy sheen to fake that healthy glow even when you’re deathly hungover. I love this stuff and when my tube eventually runs out can see myself repurchasing. It lasts forever though as it’s so pigmented you only need a tiny amount.
Highlight – Becca Skin Love Glow Glaze Stick
Dab a bit of this on your cheekbones for a gorgeous subtle dewy glow that won’t look like you’ve been at a 5 year olds unicorn face paint kit. It comes in a chubby stick but I like to use my fingers to apply it as it’s more accurate.
Eyeshadow primer – MUA Enhancing Eyeshadow Primer
Cheap as chips but it does the job and makes eyeshadow stick just as well as the pricey ones. All I really need to say!
Eyeshadow palette – Smashbox Cover Shot Ablaze eye palette
I struggled to cheese between this as the Urban Decay naked 1 palette (oldie but a goldie) but went for this in the end as it’s teeny so perfectly portable. There’s a good collection of matte and shimmer shades in warm colours and it has great colour payoff and blendability.
Mascara – Lancôme Hypnôse mascara in extra black
I get through mascaras like they are water and rarely buy the same one twice but this one might just make the cut. It is lengthening and volumising but doesn’t clump up or feel too wet.
Eyebrow pen/pencil – Glossier Brow Flick in blond
I use this to fill in gaps in my eyebrows and I love it. It is really easy to use and looks natural.
Eyebrow gel – Glossier Boy Brow in blond
I’m on my third tube of this now as I love it so much I don’t see me trying anything else. It stays in place all day but doesn’t feel cakey or stiff.
Lip balm – Evolve Organic Beauty Lip Shine in True Gold
I only really use lip balm before I do my make up to soften dry skin so it has to soak in quickly. This has a funny colour but it’s really moisturising.
This lipliner is a great pinky-nude colour for me so it goes with a lot of lipsticks. It glides on well and has good staying power.
My lipstick collection is a little out of control so it was really hard to pick just one. I think I’m happy with this choice though. It’s a gorgeous browned nude which would usually be terrible but it’s warm enough not to make me look like a ghost.
Lipgloss – Tarte quench lip rescue in Berry
When I say lipgloss who else thinks of Lancôme juicy tubes circa 2005? well this is not that. I’m not into my sticky lipglosses, I much prefer a sheer pigmented sheen which is exactly what this is.
And that’s it! Well don’t if you got to the end. I think that’s the longest blog post I’ve ever written. I hope you found some good recommendations there if you’re in the market for something new and if you have anything that you recommend then please share it in the comments.
